What is an FBO car service, and how does a private jet chauffeur work?

An FBO car service is a chauffeur booked to meet a private aircraft at the fixed base operator's terminal rather than at a commercial arrivals hall. The driver tracks the aircraft, waits at the FBO and takes passengers on to their destination. Access to the ramp depends on the airport and the FBO.

A fixed base operator, usually shortened to FBO, is the company that handles private and business aircraft at an airport: fuel, parking, crew and passenger lounges, and often customs and immigration. When you step off a private jet you do not walk into an arrivals hall. You walk into the FBO terminal, and that is where a private jet chauffeur should be.

That sounds like a small difference. It changes almost everything about the ground transfer. The kerb is different, the access rules are different, the clearance is different and the timing is different. A car service that treats an FBO pickup like a commercial airport pickup will wait in the wrong place or be turned away at a gate.

Enroutz.ca books the car for these arrivals as a specialist job. In Toronto, the Greater Toronto Area and Ontario, the ride is operated from the Toronto desk with the Enroutz.ca fleet and chauffeurs. Everywhere else, including the USA, Europe and the Middle East, it is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local chauffeur partner and booked, confirmed and invoiced by the Toronto desk. One booking, one confirmation, one invoice, one contact, around the clock.

FBO car service pages by airport

Each page below covers one business aviation airport or region: the FBOs we can name from the operator's or airport's own website, the road links, the customs arrangements and the rules that catch visitors out.

If your aircraft is landing somewhere else, enter the FBO name and the city in the online booker. The desk confirms a fixed quote for any pickup worldwide.

How the ground transfer differs at a business aviation terminal

There are four things that change when the aircraft is private.

Line of private jets parked on the tarmac under a dramatic cloudy sky, showcasing aviation and travel
Line of private jets parked on the tarmac under a dramatic cloudy sky, showcasing aviation and travel

1. The meeting point. Most FBOs have a passenger terminal with a lounge, a concierge desk and a short walk to a private car park. At some airports the vehicle can be driven right up to the aircraft. Farnborough Airport says on its own site that vehicles can be driven directly to your aircraft, and that secure parking is located directly outside the terminal. At Paris Le Bourget, the Jetex terminal describes direct ramp access and a dedicated parking area. At Teterboro, Jet Aviation describes a TSA-compliant facility with guarded entry to the airport and ramp.

2. The access list. A car going airside needs a name on a list, a driver who has been cleared and an FBO that has agreed. Whether a given car may cross to the ramp is a decision for the FBO and airport security, not for a chauffeur service, so the confirmation states where the driver will wait. Send the names early.

3. The clearance. International arrivals still need border control. At many FBOs customs and immigration officers attend by appointment or during set hours, which makes the landing time a hard constraint rather than an estimate.

4. The clock. A private flight may leave earlier than planned, arrive early or reroute to a different airport. The chauffeur tracks the aircraft and works with the crew's updates, and the desk adjusts the pickup.

Customs and immigration at the FBO: examples from official sources

Customs arrangements vary by airport and even by FBO, so treat the following as examples rather than a rule:

A panoramic view of Paris skyline featuring the Eiffel Tower during winter, showcasing iconic rooftops
A panoramic view of Paris skyline featuring the Eiffel Tower during winter, showcasing iconic rooftops
  • Signature Aviation at Toronto Pearson states on its own site that onsite customs and immigration are available during limited hours, Monday to Friday, and that the FBO is open 24 hours a day.
  • Signature Aviation at Paris Le Bourget lists onsite customs and immigration for international flights, with prior permission required for aircraft over 25 seats, and hours of 06:00 to 22:00 local time.
  • Jetex at Paris Le Bourget lists customs and immigration among its services and describes round-the-clock operations.
  • Jet Aviation at Teterboro states that US customs is available and advises confirming the process and notice directly with the FBO.
  • Farnborough Airport describes an on-site service for customs, immigration and screening.

On the Canadian side, the Canada Border Services Agency runs the CANPASS Private Aircraft program for members flying private aircraft from the United States into Canada. Everyone aboard must be a member, and members may land at any Canadian airport of entry whenever it is open for landing. The operator and the crew, not the chauffeur, are responsible for the aircraft's customs notifications.

Have these details ready when you book:

  1. The aircraft registration (tail number) and the operator or charter company.
  2. The FBO name and the airport, for example "Jet Aviation, Teterboro".
  3. The scheduled landing time and the time zone it refers to.
  4. The names of every passenger and the number of bags, golf bags or oversize items.
  5. The destination address, and whether a second stop is planned.
  6. The crew contact for last-minute changes.
  7. Whether the passengers want an alias name on the board for privacy.
  8. Any pets travelling, because some airports have their own rules. Farnborough, for example, publishes pet travel guidance for its passengers.

International arrivals receive 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, domestic arrivals 30 minutes, and other pickups 15 minutes, measured from the landing. The confirmation states the window for your trip.

Airport rules that decide which aircraft can use which field

The best-planned chauffeur transfer fails if the aircraft cannot land where the car is waiting. Two official examples show why the airport matters.

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport states in its pilot guidance that all jet aircraft, except medevac flights, and certain propeller aircraft are prohibited. A private jet cannot use the downtown island airport. Jet passengers going to Toronto use Pearson or another airport, and the Toronto FBO page explains the choices.

Van Nuys Airport publishes a mandatory noise and curfew ordinance: Stage 2 jets cannot depart between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., and the airport runs a voluntary programme encouraging jet operators to avoid flights between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when possible. A late-evening departure from Los Angeles may therefore need an earlier pickup than the passengers expect. See the Van Nuys page.

Some FBOs list their own transportation: Farnborough says its partners offer chauffeur services and helicopter transfers that take about 12 minutes to London, and Jet Aviation's Teterboro page lists passenger and crew transportation and on-site rental cars. These are legitimate options, and the cheaper choice is sometimes the right one. A chauffeur booked in advance is best when the plan involves several stops, several time zones or several passengers with different destinations.

Vehicles for private jet passengers

Models are "or similar" and confirmed at booking; partner cars are no older than four model years, with seven allowed for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach.

  • A principal travelling with one assistant usually takes a First Class Sedan (Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar) or an Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac CT6 or Lyriq or similar), each for up to three passengers.
  • A Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon Denali or similar) holds six and five or six large bags, which suits a principal with an assistant and heavy luggage.
  • An Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter) takes up to 12 and 12 bags, enough for the full cabin of a mid-size jet.
  • Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch limousine and armoured vehicles are on request, subject to availability at booking.

See the fleet page, and group transportation for larger parties.

Privacy, discretion and security

Chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips, NDAs are signed on request, and an alias can be used on the name board. For high-profile passengers, the VIP and celebrity chauffeur page explains how the desk handles arrivals away from public areas.

Enroutz.ca is a chauffeur service, not a security company. There are no armed drivers and no bodyguards. We work alongside a client's own security team. The executive protection transport page describes how a chauffeur car travels in a convoy with a principal's security vehicle.

Air shows and trade events that fill business aviation airports

Business aviation airports become crowded during major events. The Paris Air Show runs on 14 to 20 June 2027, according to the organiser's website, and Le Bourget fills with aircraft, delegations and visitors. The Farnborough International Airshow site lists FIA2026 as the current edition and counts down to FIA2028. Book ground transport as soon as your dates are fixed, because these weeks are tight for hotels, airfield slots and cars. See Paris Air Show transportation, Farnborough Airshow transportation and Dubai Airshow transportation.

Corporate accounts for flight departments

Flight departments and charter brokers that move passengers every week use a corporate account with monthly invoicing. The desk can hold standing instructions for named passengers, preferred vehicle classes and contact details for crews. The corporate chauffeur service page describes the process, and the travel desk can coordinate the ground side of a multi-stop itinerary.

Where private aviation pages connect to the rest of the network

Most business aviation journeys begin or end at a commercial airport as well. The main airports hub covers commercial terminals, the USA hub lists American cities, the Europe hub lists the European city pages and the Middle East hub covers the Gulf. For Canadian cities see the Canada hub. Toronto travellers can start from the Toronto airport transfer page.

Frequently asked questions

What is an FBO car service?

It is a chauffeur booked to meet a private or business aircraft at the fixed base operator's terminal. The driver tracks the aircraft, waits at the FBO and takes the passengers to their destination. The booker shows a fixed fare for your exact addresses and vehicle before you pay.

Can the car drive onto the ramp to meet the aircraft?

It depends on the airport and the FBO. Farnborough Airport says vehicles can be driven directly to your aircraft, and other FBOs allow cars only in a private parking area. The confirmation states where your driver will wait.

Can a private jet land at Billy Bishop airport in Toronto?

No. The airport's pilot guidance says all jet aircraft except medevac flights, and certain propeller aircraft, are prohibited. Jet passengers going to Toronto use Pearson or another airport.

What information does the chauffeur need for a private jet pickup?

The tail number, the FBO and airport, the scheduled landing time, the names of the passengers and the number of bags. A crew contact and an alias name for the board are useful additions.

How long does the chauffeur wait after the aircraft lands?

On international arrivals the free waiting time is 60 minutes after landing, on domestic arrivals 30 minutes and on other pickups 15 minutes. The confirmation states the window for your trip.

Does the chauffeur arrange customs clearance?

No. Customs and immigration are handled by the border agencies and the FBO. The chauffeur waits at the agreed point once you have cleared. CANPASS membership and similar programmes are the operator's responsibility.

Do you provide security guards?

No. Enroutz.ca is a chauffeur service, not a security company. We do not provide armed drivers or bodyguards, and we work alongside a client's own security team.

What if my private flight is early, late or diverted?

The chauffeur tracks the aircraft and the desk adjusts the pickup. If the aircraft diverts to another airport, tell the desk or the crew contact straight away so that the car can be repositioned.

What is the cancellation policy for an FBO pickup?

A booking cancelled more than 72 hours before pickup carries no charge. The charge is 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, all measured from the scheduled pickup time. Large events and conventions may have a different deadline, stated on your confirmation.
