Heathrow chauffeur: what it does and does not cost you in time

Heathrow is the busiest door into Britain, and it is built around trains. The Heathrow Express takes 15 minutes between the airport and London Paddington from Terminals 2 and 3, and the Elizabeth line runs through the airport too. That is why a private Heathrow chauffeur has to justify itself. It does, but only in particular circumstances: you are arriving with a family or heavy luggage, you are heading outside London, you are on a deadline, you are arriving after a long overnight flight, or you simply want one person to look after everything.

Enroutz.ca is a chauffeur desk based in Toronto. In London the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local chauffeur partner; the booking, confirmation and invoice stay with us. We do not own vehicles or offices in Britain. You get one confirmation, one invoice and one contact, around the clock. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old, and up to seven for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach.

In the online booker, enter your flight, terminal if you know it, destination and number of passengers. It displays the exact all-in fare for that vehicle before payment.

Which Heathrow terminal do I arrive at?

Heathrow has four passenger terminals: 2, 3, 4 and 5. Your airline decides which one. British Airways flights mostly use Terminal 5, and Star Alliance carriers including Air Canada generally use Terminal 2. Check your booking, because airlines move terminals.

The airport's own pages list drop-off areas for Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5, which matches the current layout. Terminal 1 has closed and is not part of the passenger plan. When you book, we ask for your flight number rather than your terminal, because flight data tells us the terminal on the day and reflects late changes.

Our desk gives the chauffeur the terminal, the flight status and your name. If you want a face waiting in the arrivals hall instead of a text with directions, add the name-board service. Our meet and greet page explains it, including how an alias name can be used for privacy.

How the Heathrow pick-up rules affect you

This is the single most useful thing to understand about Heathrow, and it is different from North American airports. Heathrow charges a fee every time a vehicle enters the terminal drop-off areas, and pick-ups and waiting are not allowed there. According to the airport's website, the charge is £7 every time a vehicle enters the drop-off areas, applies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and applies again on re-entry (as of 2026, from heathrow.com). Vehicles must not be left unattended, and the airport says pick-ups should be made from Terminal Parking or Park & Ride car parks.

What this means for you: a chauffeur cannot simply wait at the kerb outside arrivals the way a friend might in Toronto. Our partner follows Heathrow's current rules for where to meet you, and your confirmation gives the instruction for your terminal. If you want the chauffeur inside the building, book the name-board add-on; the chauffeur then meets you in the arrivals hall and walks you to the car.

Airport fees are built into the fixed fare the booker shows, so there is nothing to pay at the car. The exact fare is displayed before you confirm.

Entry rules for London: what Canadians and others need

Most visitors need to sort out their entry permission before the flight. The UK government's page says that most visitors need either an Electronic Travel Authorisation or a visa, depending on nationality and reason for travel. Canadian citizens usually need an ETA rather than a visa, though the reason for your visit matters. Each traveller, including babies and children, needs their own ETA. Apply through the official GOV.UK ETA service, and check it well before you fly.

When you land, the border hall can take a long time or almost none. Your chauffeur's 60-minute free wait after landing on international arrivals is designed for this: tracked flight, patient driver, no penalty for a slow queue.

From Heathrow to central London: the real distances and times

The distances below are road distances. Timings are typical outside the busiest hours. London peak traffic is long, and the M4 and the A4 can be slow at all sorts of hours.

DestinationDistanceTypical drive time
Central London (Mayfair, Knightsbridge, Westminster)about 25 km (15 mi)45 to 90 minutes
The City of London and Canary Wharfabout 35 to 40 km (22 to 25 mi)60 to 100 minutes
Windsorabout 15 km (9 mi)20 to 35 minutes
Oxfordabout 90 km (56 mi)75 to 110 minutes
London Gatwickabout 70 km (43 mi)60 to 100 minutes

Central London is the number that surprises people, because 25 km looks easy on a map. A midday run can take 45 minutes, and a Friday evening can take twice that. If you have an appointment at the other end, ask for an earlier pickup. We would rather suggest a longer buffer than promise something London will not honour.

London's low-emission zone and what it means for a car service

London's Ultra Low Emission Zone covers all London boroughs and does not include the M25, according to Transport for London. It operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year except Christmas Day, and the daily charge for non-compliant vehicles is £12.50 (as of 2026, from TfL). A fleet whose cars are four model years old or younger will generally meet the standards, and the desk will tell you if anything about your route needs to be noted. The central Congestion Charge is a separate scheme with its own rules, and TfL explains it on its website.

You do not need to do anything about these zones as a passenger. The reason to know about them is to understand why a London car service is not the same as one in a smaller city: the rules are complex, and a local partner who deals with them every day is worth having.

Honest comparison: Heathrow to Mayfair by every option

The trains are good, and you should choose them when they suit you. The Heathrow Express is a 15-minute ride to Paddington from Terminals 2 and 3, trains leave every 15 minutes, Terminal 5 adds about 6 minutes, and Terminal 4 is reached by a free Elizabeth line transfer from the Terminal 2 and 3 station (from Heathrow Express). Paddington is then a short taxi or Tube ride from many central hotels.

If you are going to Paddington, Marylebone or somewhere near an Elizabeth line station and you are travelling light, take the train. The chauffeur wins when your bags are heavy, when you are heading to Surrey or Oxfordshire, or when you cannot face a change of transport after nine hours in the air.

Heathrow to Windsor, Oxford and the Home Counties

For trips outside London a chauffeur has no real competitor. Windsor is about 15 km (9 mi) from Heathrow, which makes it one of the easiest day trips from the airport, and an excellent first stop if you want to avoid central London entirely. Oxford is about 90 km (56 mi) away by the M40, and an arrival at Heathrow followed by a drive to the colleges is a typical itinerary for academic travellers.

If you are going further, such as Bath, Cambridge or the Cotswolds, tell the desk. We can quote a fixed fare for any distance, and our hourly chauffeur service handles the day trip that starts and ends at the airport. Our private tours with driver page explains how a touring day works.

Business travel to London

London business travel is concentrated in a few places: the City, Canary Wharf, Mayfair and Westminster. They are far apart, and moving between them by taxi at midday is slow. A chauffeur booked by the hour or for the day keeps one car with you. For frequent travellers, corporate accounts offer monthly invoicing and cost-centre references, and our corporate chauffeur service page describes how an assistant books on a principal's behalf.

For the city itself, see our London chauffeur service page, which covers hotels, the City and the ExCeL exhibition centre. If you are travelling by rail onward, the St Pancras chauffeur page is relevant for Eurostar connections.

Choosing a vehicle for Heathrow

Match the car to the luggage, not the badge. An Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac CT6 or Lyriq or similar) takes three passengers and a total of two large and two cabin bags, which is plenty for a business traveller or a couple. The First Class Sedan (Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar) has the same capacity and is the choice for a long overnight arrival when you want to sleep on the way into town.

London hotels are not generous with luggage space, and families often need more room than they expect. The Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon Denali or similar) seats six with five to six large bags. For a delegation, the Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter) carries twelve passengers and twelve bags. Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch limousine and armoured vehicles are available on request, with availability confirmed at booking; mini-coaches and coaches seat 20 to 56.

Reserve your chauffeur

Drive on the left: a note for North American visitors

In Britain traffic drives on the left, and road signs use miles. Taxi doors, passenger sides and kerb positions are reversed from what you are used to, so a chauffeur will open the correct door and guide you to the kerb side. If you are travelling with children, remember that the rear seats in some cars are narrower than in a large American SUV, and tell us if you need extra seats.

Waiting time, flight tracking and cancellations

Every Heathrow pickup includes flight tracking. Late flights move the pickup, with no extra charge. You receive 60 minutes of free waiting after landing on international arrivals, 30 minutes on domestic arrivals, and 15 minutes on other pickups. Cancellations are measured from the scheduled pickup: no charge with more than 72 hours' notice; 10 percent at 72 hours or less; 50 percent at 48 hours or less; 100 percent at 24 hours or less or for a no-show.

Privacy and security

No chauffeur photographs a client or posts about a journey, and we sign NDAs when asked. Child, toddler and booster seats can be requested at booking. Wi-Fi, water and phone chargers are in most vehicles. Drinks are never promised on board; UK law applies. Enroutz.ca is a chauffeur service and not a security company; there are no armed drivers or bodyguards, but we work alongside a client's own security team.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Heathrow chauffeur worth it compared with the Heathrow Express?

For one traveller with one bag going near Paddington, the train is quick and often better. A chauffeur is worth it for families, heavy luggage, trips outside London and late arrivals.

What is the Heathrow drop-off charge?

The airport's website says £7 applies every time a vehicle enters the terminal drop-off areas, 24 hours a day (as of 2026). Pick-ups are not allowed in those areas. Our fixed fare covers the airport's charges, so there is nothing to pay at the car.

Can my chauffeur wait outside arrivals at Heathrow?

Not at the drop-off kerb. The airport says pick-ups should be made from Terminal Parking or Park & Ride. Your confirmation states where the chauffeur meets you, and a name-board greeting in the arrivals hall is available.

Which terminal will I arrive at?

Heathrow has Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5. British Airways mostly uses Terminal 5; Star Alliance carriers including Air Canada generally use Terminal 2. Your flight number tells us the answer on the day.

Do Canadians need an ETA for the UK?

Canadian citizens usually need an ETA rather than a visa, according to GOV.UK. Every traveller needs their own, including children. Apply through the official government service before you fly.

How long is the drive from Heathrow to central London?

About 25 km (15 mi), typically 45 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. Evening peaks and incidents on the M4 can add time.

Does the ULEZ affect my car service?

The Ultra Low Emission Zone covers all London boroughs and runs every day except Christmas Day. Our partner vehicles are no more than four model years old, so they are generally compliant. The desk will tell you if anything needs to be noted.

How much does a Heathrow chauffeur cost?

We do not publish rates. The online booker shows the exact all-in fare for your address and vehicle before you pay.

Can you drive me from Heathrow to Oxford or Windsor?

Yes. Windsor is about 15 km (9 mi) and Oxford about 90 km (56 mi). The booker quotes a fixed fare for any address.
