What is a city to city car service?

A city to city car service is a pre-booked private chauffeur ride between two cities, door to door, in a single vehicle with no transfers. From Toronto it covers Ottawa, Montréal, Kingston, Niagara, Muskoka, Buffalo and Detroit. The fare is fixed and quoted before you pay, and the booker shows it for your exact addresses.

Toronto sits at the centre of the busiest travel corridor in Canada, and the distances between it and its neighbours are awkward. They are too long for a casual drive after a flight and too short to justify an airline's hassle. A long distance chauffeur is the answer for travellers who value the time in the rear seat: working, resting or simply not driving.

This page sets out the distances and drive times from Toronto, compares the car honestly against rail and air, and explains how a long-distance transfer is planned. All rides that start in Toronto run from the Toronto desk with the Enroutz.ca fleet and chauffeurs.

Why take a chauffeur on a long distance

The case for a private car over several hours is not about luxury. It is about three things.

Black leather rear seats of a luxury car
Black leather rear seats of a luxury car
  • Door to door. You are collected at your address or hotel and delivered to the exact destination. There is no station, no airport and no connecting leg.
  • Time you can use. Wi-Fi, water and phone chargers are in most vehicles, so the rear seat is a workable desk or a place to rest. You cannot do that while driving.
  • Luggage and group size. A family of five with six bags fits one Luxury SUV. A team of ten fits one Executive Sprinter. Rail and air both penalise bulky luggage and large groups.

Where a car is not the best answer, we say so below.

Distances and drive times from Toronto

These figures are for the drive from downtown Toronto without extended stops. Traffic, weather and the time of day change them. The booker and the desk confirm the plan for your address.

The Ottawa and Montréal times are drawn from Ottawa Tourism and the Tourisme Montréal road-trip notes. Rail times are on the VIA Rail site and change; check before you commit.

Toronto to Ottawa by chauffeur

Ottawa is about 450 km from Toronto, 4.5 to 5 hours on Highway 401 east and Highway 416 north. It is the long-distance trip we are asked about most, because Parliament Hill, the embassies and the federal departments generate steady business travel.

The car works well here for a small team travelling together and for anyone with several stops. The honest alternatives:

  • Train. VIA Rail takes about the same time, from Union Station to Ottawa Station, with Wi-Fi and wide seats. For a solo traveller with one bag and no stops, the train is comfortable and a sensible choice.
  • Flight. About an hour in the air, but the airport transfers at both ends and the security time usually take the advantage away unless you fly from Billy Bishop.

A chauffeur takes the lead when you need to arrive at a specific address, travel with colleagues, or carry bags and documents you do not want to move through stations. See our Ottawa car service page for the city itself, and the Ottawa airport page for pickups at YOW.

Toronto to Montréal by chauffeur

The drive is about 540 km and runs along Highway 401 for nearly all of its length. Tourisme Montréal describes it as around five and a half hours of highway time with one or two quick stops, and notes that Kingston is the halfway point. The 401 becomes Highway 20 in Québec.

Five and a half hours in a car is a long time; five hours in a train or an hour in the air is shorter. We recommend the chauffeur for Montréal in three cases:

  1. You have a private conversation to hold, or work to finish, and want a space of your own.
  2. You are a group of three to six, with luggage, for whom rail fares and airport transfers add up.
  3. Your start and end points sit far from the centres of the cities, so rail and air connections would add transfers.

If you want to fly, the Montréal Trudeau airport page and Montréal car service page cover the other end. For the French-language side of Québec, see the Québec province page.

Toronto to Kingston and the Thousand Islands

Kingston is about 260 km from Toronto, roughly 2.75 hours. It is the natural stop on the Toronto-Montréal route, and a destination in its own right for the university, the limestone waterfront and the access to the Thousand Islands.

A chauffeur trip to Kingston makes sense for a day of meetings, a graduation or a short break. The VIA Rail alternative takes roughly the same time. Choose the car if you need to go on to the countryside or to a venue outside the town centre.

Toronto to Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake

Niagara Falls is about 130 km from Toronto, between 1.5 and 2 hours depending on the time of day. Weekend afternoons in summer can stretch the drive considerably; leave earlier or later than the peak.

The Niagara Falls car service page covers the attractions and the crossing to the United States. If you want a sightseeing day rather than a transfer, see private tours with driver, which builds an itinerary around the falls, the wine country and the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Toronto to Muskoka

Muskoka's lakes begin about 160 km from Toronto, at Gravenhurst, and reach Huntsville at roughly 210 km. The usual route is Highway 400 north to Barrie, then Highway 11. Allow 2 to 3.5 hours, depending on your lake and the day.

Friday afternoons in summer and Sunday evenings are the busy periods on Highway 400 and Highway 11. If you can travel on a Thursday or a Saturday morning, you will save time. The Muskoka car service page covers the resorts and the weekend traffic pattern in more detail.

For a family arriving at Pearson and heading straight to a cottage, a chauffeur removes a stop at a rental counter and a drive after a long flight. Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking.

Toronto to Buffalo and Detroit

Two cross-border runs are popular with travellers in Southern Ontario. Buffalo is about 160 km from Toronto and Detroit about 370 km. Both involve a border crossing, so documents and wait times matter.

A Toronto vehicle can take you from Toronto to the United States, and bring you back, as an international trip. It cannot do domestic US point-to-point work. The cross-border car service page explains bridges, documents and how this works. For airports, see Buffalo Niagara airport and Detroit airport.

How a long distance transfer is planned

A long ride is planned differently from a short one.

  • Departure time. We set it to avoid the worst of Toronto's rush hours and the weekend peaks to cottage country.
  • Breaks. ONroute service plazas are spaced about 80 km apart on average along Highway 401, with fuel, food and restrooms. We plan the stop around your preference.
  • Vehicle. An Executive Sedan or First Class Sedan for up to three passengers; a Luxury SUV for up to six with 5 to 6 large bags; an Executive Sprinter for up to 12 with 12 bags.
  • Return. One-way and return trips are both possible. If you return the same day, the chauffeur can wait; otherwise a separate return is booked.
  • Pickup details. We use the exact addresses you give, and on airport pickups we track the flight and adjust.

Free waiting is 15 minutes on non-airport pickups, 60 minutes after landing on international arrivals and 30 minutes on domestic arrivals. For all-day waiting at a destination, an hourly chauffeur booking is the right structure.

Seasons and conditions

Ontario's weather is part of the plan. Winter snow, freezing rain and lake-effect squalls can slow Highway 401, the QEW and the northern highways to cottage country. In summer, construction and weekend traffic cause the delays. The desk follows provincial road reports on the day, and the chauffeur adjusts the route and the departure time when conditions change.

Going beyond Toronto

If your journey begins elsewhere, the same service is available through the Enroutz.ca desk: outside Toronto, Ontario and the GTA, the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local chauffeur partner and is booked, confirmed and invoiced by the desk. The Canada hub lists the cities, and the Ontario page covers the province. For airport pickups before a long drive, see Toronto Pearson and the airports hub.

Check your fare

Booking a city-to-city ride

On the booker, enter your pickup and drop-off addresses, the date and time, the number of passengers and bags. The booker shows the exact fare for the route and vehicle before you confirm. For corporate teams, a corporate account allows monthly invoicing, and the travel desk can plan multi-stop itineraries.

Cancellation is measured from the scheduled pickup time: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100%.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Toronto to Ottawa by car?

About 450 km, which takes 4.5 to 5 hours on Highway 401 east and Highway 416 north, depending on traffic. A chauffeur takes you from your address to the destination without a transfer. The booker shows the exact fare for your route before you pay.

Is it better to take a car, train or flight from Toronto to Montréal?

For a solo traveller between city centres, the train or a short flight is usually faster. For groups, private conversations, awkward addresses or a lot of luggage, a chauffeur car makes sense. The drive takes about 5.5 hours of highway time.

Can a chauffeur take me from Pearson to Ottawa or Montréal?

Yes. Airport pickups include flight tracking and free waiting after landing, so a delayed flight does not change the plan. The desk confirms the fixed quote for the long-distance leg.

Can I take a long distance trip with a group?

Yes. An Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 passengers with 12 bags, a Luxury SUV up to six with 5 to 6 large bags, and mini-coaches and coaches of 20 to 56 seats are available on request. Availability is confirmed at booking.

Is Wi-Fi available on a long distance ride?

Most vehicles have Wi-Fi, water and phone chargers. The exact vehicle is confirmed at booking, so tell the desk if Wi-Fi matters for your trip.

Can the chauffeur stop on the way?

Yes. Tell us where you want to stop, for a meal, a visit or a meeting, and the stop is added to the plan. Long breaks may be treated as waiting time under the booking.

Do you run one-way and return trips?

Both. For a same-day return the chauffeur can wait at the destination; for a later return a separate trip is booked. Each is quoted before you pay.

Can you drive from Toronto into the United States?

Yes, as an international trip, with the vehicle based in Toronto. Domestic US trips are delivered by US-licensed partners. Every passenger must carry valid travel documents. See our cross-border page for the details.

Are fares shown before I book?

Yes. The fare is fixed and quoted before you pay, for your exact addresses and vehicle. Enroutz.ca does not publish rate tables, because the right answer depends on the route, the date and the vehicle.
