PortMiami is busy, compact and spread across an island, and the single most common mistake is going to the wrong terminal. Every cruise line has its own building, the letters are not in an order that helps a visitor, and the airport is close enough that people assume it will be easy. A PortMiami transfer that starts with the right terminal name avoids the one problem that costs time on embarkation morning.

Enroutz.ca takes the booking from Toronto and hands the ride to a vetted, licensed and commercially insured chauffeur partner in Florida. Domestic US trips are driven by US-licensed partners, as the rules require. You get one confirmation, one invoice and one number to call at any hour, and the booker shows the exact fare before you pay.

How do you get from Miami International Airport to PortMiami?

By private car it is about 13 km (8 miles) and usually 20 to 30 minutes from Miami International Airport (MIA) to the cruise terminals. The port also notes that most cruise lines run shuttles from the airport. Fort Lauderdale (FLL) is farther, about 45 km (28 miles).

Short distances do not mean instant trips. Cruise days send thousands of passengers to the same few approaches in the late morning, and the island has a limited number of ways in. Build your timing around your cruise line's boarding window rather than the length of the drive.

Which terminal is yours?

The port's official list sets out the terminals by letter, with the cruise lines they serve today. This is the reference the port publishes, and assignments can change with the season, so always confirm against your own cruise documents.

Ask your driver to confirm the letter before you leave the airport. The booking carries the terminal, and the driver goes there, not to a general port gate.

The tunnel and how the island is reached

PortMiami lies on an island between downtown Miami and Miami Beach. The port describes the Port of Miami Tunnel as a dedicated, toll-free route connecting PortMiami to I-395 and the MacArthur Causeway, open to cruise and cargo traffic (PortMiami directions and parking). The port also notes parking on both the north and south sides.

For passengers, the tunnel is why the drive from MIA is short and why it is reliable most of the time. A driver who knows the island also knows which terminals are approached from which side, which saves the circling that rideshare drivers sometimes do on heavy days.

Miami airport, Fort Lauderdale or both?

Many cruise guests land at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood because flights are lower-cost or more convenient, then discover that PortMiami is more than 40 km away. The distance is a surprise, and a transfer that was an afterthought becomes a 45-minute leg.

  • MIA to PortMiami: about 13 km. This is the natural pairing.
  • FLL to PortMiami: about 45 km. Plan 40 to 70 minutes, and allow longer on a Friday afternoon.
  • FLL to Port Everglades: under 3 km. If your ship leaves from Fort Lauderdale, see our Port Everglades transfer page.

When you book, check that the port named on your cruise ticket matches the airport name in the plan. Check this before you buy flights, not after.

The port's own transport page describes the public route from MIA: the Metrorail Orange Line to Government Center, the Metromover to Freedom Tower, then the free Coral Way Trolley across the PortMiami Bridge. It also lists taxis at all cruise terminals on cruise days, rideshare in designated pick-up and drop-off zones, Brightline's Vacation Service, and rental shuttles from Dollar and Hertz. Its ground-transportation directory lists permitted shuttle and limousine companies.

Honest summary: if you have one backpack and a flexible day, the train-and-trolley route costs the least. It is not a good plan with two suitcases and a child. The cruise-line shuttle is low-cost and fine if your timing fits the pickup rounds. A private car is for the situations where predictability matters more than the last dollar.

Embarkation morning, minute by minute

  1. Book the ride for the boarding window, not the airport time. If your flight lands at 8 am and boarding opens at 11, you can eat breakfast; the car is booked for when you want to arrive.
  2. Give the terminal letter and your flight number. The desk tracks the flight on every airport pickup.
  3. Meet the driver. The name board is inside arrivals if you add meet-and-greet; an alias can be on the board for privacy.
  4. Load and ride through the tunnel. Typical time is 20 to 30 minutes from MIA.
  5. Drop at your terminal. Porters take bags from the kerb. Keep passports, tickets and medication in the carry-on, because checked bags go through the ship's process and you will not see them until the cabin.

Do not arrive hours early. Cruise lines assign boarding windows to spread arrivals, and a terminal that opens at 11 am has nowhere comfortable for a group that turns up at 9. Ask us about timing if you are unsure.

Disembarkation day and the flight home

The ship docks early and guests leave in groups. Arrange the pickup after your group is called, not before; the ride has a standard 15-minute wait at the terminal. Customs and baggage reclaim take longer than the drive to MIA.

For the flight, allow at least three hours from the time you expect to walk off the ship to the time your flight departs on a domestic itinerary, and more on an international departure. Our Miami International Airport page explains the airport end of the journey. If you are flying from Fort Lauderdale, say so when you book.

Hotel nights, Miami Beach and extending the trip

Plenty of travellers add a night in Miami before the ship. A hotel on Miami Beach is across the water from the port, and the drive to the terminals is short. If you are staying on the beach, Fontainebleau Miami Beach is among the hotels we cover. Ask the desk to pick you up from the hotel entrance and take you to the correct terminal; this is a good pairing for a late flight the night before.

For other Miami rides, including airport runs unrelated to a cruise, see our Miami car service page. If you are arriving by private jet, the Opa-locka private aviation page covers the FBO transfers. Visitors timing a trip to the art fair should check Art Basel Miami Beach before they book, because event weeks affect traffic.

Miami is also a natural gateway to the Caribbean from Canada, and Toronto is one of the main feeder cities. The Toronto fleet takes you to Pearson, you fly south, and a Florida partner meets you at MIA; see Pearson Airport limo for the Toronto end.

Groups, multiple ships and large parties

A wedding or family reunion that cruises together needs several cars or one large vehicle. A Luxury SUV carries up to 6 passengers with 5 to 6 large bags, an Executive Sprinter up to 12 with 12 bags, and a mini-coach or coach from 20 seats on request. For parties above that, ask about group transportation. Corporate and incentive groups can use corporate accounts with monthly invoicing.

Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking, which is worth doing for a family travelling with infants. Most vehicles have Wi-Fi, water and phone chargers.

Hurricane season and flexible bookings

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June to November, so an October sailing from Miami may be rerouted or shifted. Cruise lines decide that, not the port or us. If your itinerary changes, tell the desk, and the pickup follows the new schedule. Our standard cancellation terms apply, measured from the scheduled pickup time, with the details shown on your confirmation.

How the Florida chauffeur network works

Outside Toronto and Ontario, rides are delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local chauffeur partner and booked, confirmed and invoiced by the Enroutz.ca desk. We do not own vehicles or offices in Florida. For the wider picture of coverage in the United States, see the USA hub and the cruise ports hub. Nearby Florida ports are covered on our Port Canaveral page.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Miami airport from the PortMiami cruise terminals?

Miami International Airport is about 13 km (8 miles) from the cruise terminals. Allow 20 to 30 minutes. The port itself does not publish a distance, so we state it as a planning estimate.

How far is Fort Lauderdale airport from PortMiami?

About 45 km (28 miles), usually 40 to 70 minutes depending on I-95 traffic. If your ship sails from Fort Lauderdale instead, Port Everglades is under 3 km from FLL.

Which terminal do I go to at PortMiami?

It depends on your cruise line. The port lists MSC at Terminal AA, Royal Caribbean at Terminal A, Norwegian at B, Carnival at D, E and F, and Virgin Voyages at V. Always confirm in your cruise documents, because assignments can change.

Can I book a PortMiami transfer in advance?

Yes. Enter your flight number or hotel address and your terminal in the booker. It shows the exact fare for your vehicle before payment, and the desk confirms the ride.

Do cruise lines offer airport shuttles to PortMiami?

The port states that most cruise lines offer shuttle service from Miami International Airport to the port. A shuttle is the lowest-cost option, with fixed pickup rounds. A private car suits you when you want to leave on your own schedule.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

We track the flight on every airport pickup. International arrivals include 60 minutes of free waiting after landing and domestic arrivals include 30 minutes. If the delay is long, tell the desk so the pickup is moved.

Can I take a taxi or rideshare instead?

Yes. The port lists taxis at every terminal on cruise days and rideshare in designated zones. They are sensible for light luggage. Fares can rise when several ships turn around at once, which is when a fixed fare helps.

Will the driver wait for me after the cruise?

Pickups at the terminal include a standard 15-minute wait. Book the ride after your disembarkation group is called, not at the ship's arrival time.

What is your cancellation policy?

More than 72 hours' notice is free. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10%, at 48 hours or less 50%, and at 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup time.
