Schiphol is one of the easiest airports in Europe to leave. It has a single terminal building, a train station directly underneath it, and Amsterdam only a short run away. That makes it an unusual place to sell a chauffeur, so this page is candid: it shows when the train is the better choice, and when a pre-booked Schiphol chauffeur earns its place. The cases are luggage, children, a group, a late arrival, a meeting in The Hague or Rotterdam, or a client you want to meet properly.
When should you book a private chauffeur at Schiphol Airport?
Book a Schiphol chauffeur when you have heavy bags, a group, a tight meeting, or a destination the train does not serve well, such as The Hague. Your driver tracks the flight, waits up to 60 minutes free on an international arrival, and the booker fixes the fare before you pay.
Enroutz.ca is a Toronto-based chauffeur service. Our own fleet and chauffeurs operate in Toronto, the GTA and Ontario. In the Netherlands, the transfer is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local chauffeur partner, and the Enroutz.ca desk books, confirms and invoices it. One booking, one confirmation, one invoice and one point of contact, day or night.
Enter any pickup in the booker, including Schiphol, and the desk confirms a fixed quote for the exact addresses and vehicle before you commit.
One terminal, one arrivals experience
Schiphol runs as a single terminal building with piers, rather than a set of separate numbered terminals you must choose between. For a chauffeur pickup that simplifies things: you land, clear passport control, collect bags and walk out into the arrivals area, where the public concourse is Schiphol Plaza.

The practical consequences:
- One meeting area. Your chauffeur knows where to be, and the desk shares the arrangement in your confirmation.
- The train is right there. According to the City of Amsterdam's visitor site, the train station sits directly beneath the terminal, which makes the rail option easy to compare on the spot.
- Name-board option. Add the name-board meet and greet and the chauffeur stands in the arrivals area with your name or an alias on the board. Choose an alias if you would rather not show your name in a public hall.
Always check your airline's confirmation for the pier and gate; the chauffeur's meeting point does not depend on them.
Schiphol to Amsterdam: distance, time and the 17-minute train
Amsterdam city centre is about 18 km from Schiphol. By road that is usually 25 to 40 minutes, longer in the morning and evening peaks and on rainy days when the A4 and A10 slow down. The Dutch motorway network around the ring is busy at rush hour in both directions.

The City of Amsterdam visitor site describes the train as running eight times an hour to Amsterdam Central Station in about 17 minutes, with stops at Sloterdijk, Lelylaan and Hoofddorp on the way. Tickets are sold at the yellow machines at Schiphol, or you can tap in and out with a bank card, credit card or phone at the yellow card readers near the escalators in Schiphol Plaza. The same page says Intercity Direct trains run from 2025 to Amsterdam Zuid, where you can connect to the metro. As of 2026 that page lists a one-way fare of €4.90.
So for a single traveller going to a hotel next to Amsterdam Central, the train beats any car. A chauffeur starts to win when the address is not near a station, the weather is bad, you have more than two bags, or you are carrying anything fragile.
| Option | Typical time | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train to Amsterdam Central | About 17 minutes | Lowest | Solo travellers to the centre, light luggage |
| Airport Express bus 397 | Varies with traffic | Low | Museumplein, Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein hotels |
| Taxi from the official rank | About 25 to 40 minutes | Metered | One or two people, no booking made |
| Rideshare | About 25 to 40 minutes | Variable | Short notice, small groups |
| Hotel shuttle | Varies | Included or fixed | Airport hotels |
| Rental car | About 25 to 40 minutes | Per day plus parking | Day trips beyond the city |
| Private chauffeur | About 25 to 40 minutes | Fixed fare via booker | Families, luggage, groups, late landings, The Hague |
The bus information comes from the same City of Amsterdam page: line 397 runs every 10 minutes by day, with a Niteliner N97 hourly at night, and serves Museumplein, Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein. Taxis wait at the official rank, and Uber and Bolt use a designated pick-up point following signs in the terminal. The page also advises avoiding drivers who solicit inside the airport, as they are not officially approved. Read it at I amsterdam: how to get from Schiphol to Amsterdam, and check timetables on NS.
Where a Schiphol chauffeur clearly beats the train
The cases where we advise booking a car are specific:

- The Hague. The seat of the Dutch government, the International Court of Justice and many embassies is about 50 km from Schiphol. By road it is typically 40 to 55 minutes.
- Rotterdam and Utrecht. Both are reachable by train, but a one-car transfer avoids luggage and a connection.
- Late landings. After a late flight, a fixed arrival time is worth more than a timetable.
- Families and groups. A Luxury SUV carries up to 6, an Executive Sprinter up to 12.
- Business arrivals. An executive who lands at 7:30 and has a 9:00 meeting does not want to read a rail map.
- Client reception. Meeting a client at arrivals with a name board is a courtesy that a rideshare cannot provide.
The approximate road distances from Schiphol are about 18 km to Amsterdam, about 50 km to The Hague and about 70 km to Rotterdam. Times depend on traffic, and the desk confirms the figure when you book.
Arriving in the Netherlands from Toronto, the USA or the Middle East
For travellers flying from Toronto to Amsterdam, the flight is usually overnight and lands in the morning, six hours ahead of Toronto time for most of the year (five for a short stretch each spring and autumn).

Three planning points:
- Customs and passport control. Non-EU arrivals queue at passport control. The Entry/Exit System now records facial images and fingerprints at Schengen borders for non-EU travellers, which can lengthen waits. The airport's flight-tracking pickup and 60 minutes of free waiting absorb that.
- Cash and cards. The Government of Canada notes that credit cards are not widely accepted in the Netherlands and recommends carrying enough cash. Not every taxi or small business takes foreign cards, which is another reason to pay for a chauffeur transfer in advance.
- Pickpockets. The same source says petty theft is common in Amsterdam, around Central Station and on some tram routes, so luggage and documents travel more safely in a car than on a crowded platform.
For the full entry guidance, read travel.gc.ca for the Netherlands before you fly.
The last few hundred metres in central Amsterdam
Distance to the city is only half the story. Many hotels in the canal belt sit on narrow, one-way streets lined with bicycles, trams and water, where a large car cannot always stop at the door. A local chauffeur partner knows which hotels have a practical drop point and which need a short walk from the nearest legal stopping place. Tell the desk the hotel name and the number of bags, and ask for the arrival instructions to be added to the confirmation. If you are carrying more luggage than you can manage over a canal-side cobbled lane, a Luxury SUV with a driver who helps with bags is often the simpler choice than two taxis.
For cycling-heavy streets, remember that the Netherlands treats cyclists as a priority road user. Leave the car doors to the chauffeur on the kerb side.

Waiting time, tracking and meet and greet at AMS
Flight tracking is included on every airport pickup. If the plane lands early or late, the chauffeur's schedule shifts without a phone call from you.
Free waiting time is 60 minutes after landing on international arrivals, 30 minutes on domestic arrivals and 15 minutes on other pickups. Because Schiphol is a major connecting hub, many guests are arriving on a second flight after a connection; give the desk the flight number of the final leg so tracking follows the right aircraft.
Discretion is part of the service. Chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips, and NDAs are signed on request. For the full description, see meet and greet service and VIP chauffeur.

Schiphol for business: The Hague, embassies and corporate accounts
Amsterdam is a business city, but The Hague and its surroundings are where governments and international institutions meet. A chauffeur booking for a delegation to The Hague is a different job from a tourist transfer: several passengers, strict timing, and sometimes a security team of the client's own.
Enroutz.ca is a chauffeur service, not a security company. There are no armed drivers and no bodyguards. We work alongside a client's own security team and coordinate pickup points and timing with them. See executive protection transport for how that works.
For recurring business travel, corporate accounts with monthly invoicing are available. Read about corporate accounts and the corporate chauffeur service. For trips that span several European cities, the city-to-city car service page explains how a one-way transfer between airports and cities is quoted.
Leaving Schiphol: departure timing
For a departure, the chauffeur collects you at the hotel at an agreed time and drives to the airport. Because Schiphol is a large single terminal with security and border control queues, give yourself generous time for an international flight. Your airline's check-in guidance is the reference, and the desk can set the pickup time to match.
If your next stop is Toronto, you can book the return leg from Pearson at the same time. See Pearson airport limo or Toronto airport transfer. The same desk handles both ends.
More European gateways
If your trip continues beyond the Netherlands, the same desk handles Frankfurt Airport, London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle, and city-level service in Amsterdam. The Europe hub and the airports directory list every airport we cover.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Schiphol Airport from Amsterdam city centre?
About 18 km. By road the drive usually takes 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. The train to Amsterdam Central takes about 17 minutes and runs eight times an hour.
Is a chauffeur better than the train from Schiphol?
Not always. For one traveller going to a hotel near Amsterdam Central the train is quicker and the lowest cost. A chauffeur is the better choice with heavy luggage, children, a group, a late arrival or a destination such as The Hague.
How much is a Schiphol airport transfer?
The fare depends on your exact addresses, the vehicle class and the time of travel. The online booker shows the exact all-in fare before you confirm, so you know it before you pay.
Where does my chauffeur meet me at Schiphol?
Schiphol has one terminal building, and the arrivals area is Schiphol Plaza. Your confirmation gives the meeting arrangement, and a name-board meet and greet inside arrivals is available as an add-on.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Flight tracking is included on every airport pickup, so the chauffeur adjusts automatically. On international arrivals the first 60 minutes after landing are free waiting time.
How long does it take to get from Schiphol to The Hague?
About 50 km by road, typically 40 to 55 minutes depending on traffic. The desk confirms the time for your specific address when you book.
Can you provide a child seat?
Yes. Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking. Tell the desk the ages or weights when you reserve.
Do Canadians need a visa for the Netherlands?
No visa is needed for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen area, and the passport must be valid for at least three months after departure, according to the Government of Canada. Check travel.gc.ca for the latest on ETIAS and the Entry/Exit System.
