New York's Penn Station is a heavily used piece of the Northeast corridor and one of the least self-explanatory. A traveller who wants a Penn Station car service needs to know three things: which building Amtrak uses, where the pickup curb is, and how long the ride to the hotel or airport takes at the hour they will arrive. This page covers those three questions, explains the Moynihan Train Hall, compares the train, subway and taxi options with a pre-booked chauffeur, and covers the Toronto connection on the Amtrak Maple Leaf.
Penn Station car service: how Enroutz.ca handles New York
Trips inside the United States are delivered by US-licensed chauffeur partners, because Canadian vehicles cannot do domestic point-to-point work in the United States. The partner is vetted, licensed and commercially insured, and the vehicle is no more than four model years old (Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach up to seven). The Enroutz.ca desk books, confirms and invoices the ride, so you receive one confirmation and one invoice, with one point of contact 24/7.
Cross-border trips between Toronto and New York run from Toronto. If you are driving to New York from Ontario, you can arrange the whole journey as an international ride, and the desk will arrange a US-licensed partner for the local part of the visit. See the cross-border car service page.
The booker shows the exact all-in fare for your address and vehicle before you pay, so you do not need to watch a meter or compare rideshare surge. Read the New York car service page for the wider city service, and the USA hub for other cities.
Where is the pickup at Penn Station and Moynihan Train Hall?

Amtrak's station page gives Moynihan Train Hall at 351 West 31st Street as its New York home, with taxi pickup on 31st Street and rideshare and other pick-up and drop-off on 33rd Street, both between 8th and 9th Avenues. Your Enroutz.ca confirmation names the exact meeting point.
Penn Station is not a single doorway. Moynihan Train Hall, in the former Farley Post Office building across Eighth Avenue, is the Amtrak entrance; the older concourses of Penn Station sit beneath Madison Square Garden and serve Long Island Rail Road and NJ Transit. Amtrak's page lists those commuter services and the subway as connections, so it is easy to leave by the wrong exit. Tell the chauffeur which train you are on and the car is positioned accordingly.
How the meeting works:
- At booking, give the Amtrak train number and scheduled arrival time.
- The confirmation states the pickup point. Use that, not the taxi line, because the taxi stand and the pickup curb are on different streets.
- If you add the meet-and-greet, the chauffeur waits at an agreed point with a name board; an alias can be used for privacy.
- If the train is late, tell the desk. Waiting time on a station pickup is 15 minutes from the scheduled pickup time, and the desk is staffed 24/7.
What Amtrak serves at Penn Station
According to Amtrak, Moynihan Train Hall is "the home of Amtrak in New York City" and hosts Acela, Northeast Regional, Keystone Service (to Harrisburg via Philadelphia) and Empire Service (to Albany and beyond). Amtrak lists its top destinations from the station as Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. Its page also states that gate and track information is posted in the Amtrak app, and boarding gates are usually posted 15 minutes before departure.

Amtrak's Metropolitan Lounge at the station is open to eligible customers, including Acela First Class passengers and those with a same-day lounge pass; check Amtrak's New York station page for the hours and eligibility on your date.

The Amtrak Maple Leaf: New York to Toronto
The Maple Leaf is the direct link between New York and Toronto. Amtrak lists a daily departure from Moynihan Train Hall to Toronto Union Station, crossing the border at Niagara Falls, with a journey time of 12 hours 30 minutes. It stops at Yonkers, Poughkeepsie, Albany-Rensselaer, Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo before reaching Niagara Falls, Ontario, St. Catharines, Oakville and Toronto. Amtrak has also posted a Maple Leaf service adjustment notice for 17 and 18 October 2026, so look at Amtrak's Maple Leaf page on the day you travel.

For a traveller going the other way, a chauffeur from Penn Station to the hotel is a good first step, and the ride at the Toronto end is booked on the same desk. See Union Station Toronto. If you would rather drive the whole route, the road distance from Toronto to New York is about 800 km (500 miles), usually eight to nine hours plus time at the border. The cross-border car service page explains the documents and the border steps.
Penn Station to the airports
Airport times from Midtown depend heavily on the hour. The figures below are typical, not guaranteed.

| Destination | Distance from Penn Station | Typical drive time | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| JFK | about 25 km (15 miles) | 40 to 90 minutes | Van Wyck Expressway and Grand Central Parkway are the pinch points |
| LaGuardia (LGA) | about 14 km (9 miles) | 25 to 60 minutes | Queens bridges and Grand Central Parkway |
| Newark Liberty (EWR) | about 22 km (14 miles) | 30 to 75 minutes | Lincoln or Holland Tunnel and New Jersey Turnpike |
| Teterboro (TEB) | about 20 km (12 miles) | 30 to 60 minutes | private aviation; Lincoln Tunnel |
For terminal procedures, see our airport pages for JFK, Newark and LaGuardia, and the Teterboro private aviation page. The airports hub has the full list.
Penn Station: train, subway, taxi, rideshare or chauffeur?
| Option | Typical time to a Midtown hotel | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walk | 5 to 20 minutes | free | hotels within a few blocks and one bag |
| Subway | 10 to 25 minutes | lowest | light luggage and a direct subway line |
| Yellow taxi | 10 to 25 minutes | metered | quick curbside departures |
| Rideshare | 10 to 30 minutes | surge-priced at peak times | short notice, light luggage |
| Private chauffeur | 10 to 30 minutes, door to door | fixed fare via booker | families, groups, heavy luggage, late-night arrivals, anyone who wants a confirmed vehicle |
When the cheaper option is the better choice: for a hotel two blocks from Eighth Avenue, walk. The subway is reliable and faster than any car during the 17:00 rush. A chauffeur justifies the fare when luggage, children, a late arrival or a time-critical pickup are in play, or when your destination is outside Manhattan.
Midtown traffic, tolling and timing
Penn Station sits at 31st to 33rd Streets, inside Manhattan's Congestion Relief Zone, which the Metropolitan Transportation Authority describes as covering local streets and avenues south of and including 60th Street, excluding some highways. The toll applies to vehicles entering that zone and depends on vehicle type, time of day and payment method. The Enroutz.ca booker shows an all-in fare for your trip, so you do not do that arithmetic. Read the MTA's Congestion Relief Zone page for the official rules.
The practical guidance:
- Plan extra time between 16:00 and 19:00 on weekdays, and on Friday afternoons for outbound traffic.
- Expect closures on days of parades, marches and major events. The chauffeur adjusts the staging.
- Leave large buffers for airport departures. For an international flight from JFK or Newark, arrive at the terminal with the time recommended by the airline.
Hotels, Javits Center and Broadway
Penn Station is close to several of Midtown's main destinations.
- Jacob K. Javits Convention Center: about 1.3 km (0.8 miles), a 5 to 15 minute drive, depending on event traffic. See the trade shows hub for shows we serve.
- Times Square and Broadway: about 1 km (0.6 miles), 5 to 15 minutes by car and often faster on foot.
- Fifth Avenue hotels, including The Plaza: about 3 km (2 miles), 10 to 25 minutes.
- Hudson Yards and the High Line: about 1.5 km (1 mile), 5 to 15 minutes.
First visit to New York by train: a short plan
If New York is new to you, the transition from rail to street is the part that benefits most from a plan. The sequence that works for most first-time visitors from Canada, the UK or the Gulf is simple.
- Before you leave, confirm the station name on the ticket and enter it in the booking, along with your train number and the hotel address.
- On the train, check the Amtrak app for the track and gate; Amtrak says gates are usually posted about 15 minutes before departure at its New York station.
- On arrival, walk to the pickup point named in your confirmation, not to the first curb you see. The taxi line is on 31st Street and the pick-up and drop-off area is on 33rd, according to Amtrak.
- In the car, ask the chauffeur about the next day's route. Event days, parades and diplomatic traffic around the United Nations in September change which avenues are usable, and a local chauffeur can warn you.
Tipping norms in the United States differ from many countries: gratuity for a car service is customary in the United States. Ask the desk before you travel if you want to know what the confirmation does and does not include.
Late arrivals, weekends and night travel
Trains from Albany, Boston and Washington reach New York through the evening, and Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons are typically the busiest travel periods. For night arrivals, a pre-booked chauffeur removes the usual uncertainty: the vehicle is confirmed, the pickup is arranged, and the desk can be reached at any hour. If your train is late enough to miss the scheduled pickup, message the desk rather than wait at the curb. The chauffeur partner chooses the route on the day, so you do not need to plan around bridge or tunnel closures yourself.
Penn Station and Grand Central: do not confuse them
Grand Central Terminal is a different station, about 2 km (1.2 miles) east. It handles Metro-North commuter trains to the Hudson Valley and Connecticut, not Amtrak long-distance services. If your ticket says "New York Penn" or "NYP", you want Moynihan Train Hall or Penn Station. If your ticket is for a Metro-North train, your station is Grand Central. Say which station in the booking notes so the car is waiting at the right place.
Corporate and group travel through Penn Station
Corporate accounts include monthly invoicing and cost-centre references. For multi-city trips between Toronto, New York and Washington, one booking with the desk covers each ride, with a single invoice. Read the corporate chauffeur service page, the roadshow car service page for investor trips, and the corporate accounts page. For a group, an Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 passengers with 12 bags.
Frequently asked questions
Where does my chauffeur meet me at Penn Station?
At the point stated in your confirmation. Amtrak lists pick-up and drop-off on 33rd Street between 8th and 9th Avenues and taxis on 31st Street. Add the meet-and-greet option if you want a name board.

About 25 km (15 miles), usually 40 to 90 minutes, depending on the Van Wyck and the hour. The booker shows the exact fare for your address and vehicle before you confirm.
Can I take the Amtrak Maple Leaf to Toronto and have a car at both ends?
Yes. Book a pickup at Penn Station in the US and a pickup at Union Station in Toronto on the same desk. Check Amtrak's service notices for 17 and 18 October 2026.
Is the subway better than a chauffeur from Penn Station?
For light luggage and a hotel near a subway line, yes. A chauffeur is better with luggage, children, late arrivals or airport connections.

A US-licensed, vetted and commercially insured chauffeur partner, booked, confirmed and invoiced by the Enroutz.ca desk. Canadian vehicles cannot do point-to-point work inside the United States.
Does the chauffeur wait if my train is late?
Waiting time on a station pickup is 15 minutes from the scheduled pickup time. Tell the desk if the train is delayed.
What is the cancellation policy?
More than 72 hours' notice is free; 72 hours or less carries 10%, 48 hours or less 50%, and 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup time. Large events may carry a different deadline, stated on the confirmation.
