Dublin Airport sits about 10 km north of the city centre, close to Junction 2 of the M1, which is why a pre-booked chauffeur is usually the calmest way to start or end a trip to Ireland. This page explains how a Dublin airport chauffeur works for travellers flying in from Canada, the USA, the Gulf and the rest of Europe, and what to expect at Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and the US preclearance area.

Who needs a Dublin airport chauffeur?

A Dublin airport chauffeur suits anyone who wants a fixed fare, a named driver and flight tracking instead of a kerbside queue: first-time visitors, executives with back-to-back meetings, families with luggage and travellers landing after a long Atlantic crossing. Enroutz.ca books it; a licensed local partner drives it.

Most people who book a private car at DUB fall into four groups. The first is the transatlantic arrival, often a Toronto or New York traveller who has slept badly and wants to be in a hotel lobby rather than working out which door the taxi rank is behind. The second is the business traveller with a first meeting soon after landing. The third is the family or small group, for whom one Luxury SUV or an Executive Sprinter is simpler than two taxis. The fourth is the traveller whose destination is not Dublin at all, but a castle hotel, a golf links or a city two or three hours away by road.

Enroutz.ca is a Toronto-based black car and chauffeur service. In Ireland the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local chauffeur partner, and it is booked, confirmed and invoiced by the Enroutz.ca desk. You get one booking, one confirmation, one invoice and one point of contact around the clock. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old, and Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach are accepted up to seven. We do not own vehicles or offices in Ireland, and we do not pretend to.

Terminal 1 and Terminal 2: which one are you using?

Dublin Airport has two passenger terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Taxis wait at the kerb outside both, and the set-down zones for private cars are in front of both terminals. Your airline decides which building you use, so check the airline's confirmation rather than guessing from the route.

The US preclearance facility is located in Terminal 2 (the airport's own preclearance page names it), so US-bound passengers should expect to depart from that building, but always confirm the terminal with your carrier. If your flight changes terminals, tell the desk and the chauffeur is re-briefed; because every airport pickup is flight-tracked, the partner also sees the terminal and the actual landing time as the airline publishes it.

A few practical points that apply to both buildings:

  • The airport describes the terminals as steps from its taxi kerbs, so walking to a meeting point is short, but distances inside a busy arrivals hall still add minutes with luggage.
  • Dublin Airport requires chauffeur companies to hold a permit to use its chauffeur parking facility and to follow its published rules of conduct. Your partner works within those rules, which is one reason a pre-booked chauffeur is not told to circle the forecourt.
  • The airport's peak period for US preclearance is stated as 05:00 to 12:00, so morning departures are the busiest for the terminal and its approach roads.

How the pickup works on arrival

For an arrival you give the desk your flight number, passenger names, the number of large bags and your destination. The partner tracks the flight and adjusts for early or late landings without you phoning anyone.

On international arrivals we include 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, and 30 minutes on domestic arrivals. Passport control, baggage reclaim and customs take most people somewhere inside that window, and a long queue does not start a meter because there is no meter: the fare was fixed at booking.

You can add a name-board meet and greet inside arrivals. This is useful if you are travelling with someone who has not been to Dublin before or who would rather be walked to the car than text a driver. On request the board carries an alias instead of your own name, which is a simple privacy measure for executives and public figures. Read more on the meet and greet service page.

Once you are in the car, most vehicles carry water, phone chargers and Wi-Fi ("most", not all, and the exact model is confirmed at booking). Child, toddler and booster seats can be requested at the time of booking. Alcohol is never promised on board, and Irish law applies in the vehicle as it does anywhere else.

US preclearance at Dublin: what it means for your chauffeur booking

Dublin is one of the few airports in Europe where US Customs and Border Protection inspects travellers before they board a US-bound flight. CBP lists Dublin and Shannon as its two Irish preclearance locations. The airport's own page describes the process: you check in, pass airport security, wait for your allocated preclearance time on the flight information screens and then head to the preclearance area. The payoff is that you land in the United States as a domestic passenger, without the immigration line.

For a chauffeur booking this changes three things.

  1. Leave earlier for the airport. The airport says to give yourself plenty of time for check-in, security and preclearance, and flags 05:00 to 12:00 as the peak. Tell the desk your flight time and the chauffeur will work back from the earlier arrival time, not from take-off.
  2. Sort your ESTA before you travel. The airport states that if you are travelling under the US Visa Waiver Programme you must apply online at least 72 hours before departure and that you cannot board without an approved ESTA. Canadians travelling to the US do not follow the same ESTA path, so check your own rules with your airline and with the official CBP pages.
  3. Mind what you carry. The airport warns that food, including items bought before preclearance, may be restricted, and that duty-free exemptions apply in the country of purchase. Ask your chauffeur to stop at a shop before the airport if you need something, not after you pass security.

You can read the airport's preclearance guidance on Dublin Airport's US preclearance page and the overview on CBP's preclearance page.

Dublin Airport to the city: distance and drive time

The airport is about 10 km (roughly 6 miles) north of the city. The road you take depends on where you are going, and the chauffeur chooses it on the day according to traffic. Typical timings, which are approximate and vary with traffic:

RouteDistanceTypical drive
Airport to Dublin city centreabout 10 km (6 mi)20 to 45 minutes
Airport to the Docklandsabout 12 km (7.5 mi)25 to 50 minutes
Airport to south-city hotelsabout 15 km (9 mi)30 to 55 minutes
Airport to the M50 and Dublin suburbsabout 8 to 25 km (5 to 15 mi)15 to 45 minutes

The booker shows the exact all-in fare for your address and vehicle before you confirm, so you do not need to estimate what the trip will cost.

Beyond Dublin: long transfers by road from DUB

Ireland is a compact country, and a chauffeur is often the simplest way to cover ground that a train does not reach. Distances below are approximate road figures and drive times assume normal conditions.

Black luxury SUV on a mountain road

  • Belfast: about 165 km (100 miles), usually two to two and a half hours. Remember that Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, so your passport and any UK entry requirements are your responsibility to check.
  • Galway: about 210 km (130 miles), roughly two and a half to three hours.
  • Cork: about 255 km (160 miles), around three hours.

For a day out with an itinerary rather than a point-to-point transfer, use hourly chauffeur service. The chauffeur waits, so you are not coordinating return transport in a country road village at dusk. A Luxury SUV carries up to six passengers and five to six large bags for a golf party.

Dublin airport chauffeur compared with the alternatives

The honest answer is that the lowest-cost option is not always the best one, and a private car is not always the right call. The airport's own transport pages list bus services, taxis and car hire, and these are the real alternatives.

OptionTypical time to city centreCostBest for
Airport busVaries by route and trafficLowestSolo travellers, light luggage, no deadline
Taxi from the T1 or T2 kerb20 to 45 minutesMeteredShort stays, no pre-booking, flexible plans
Hire carSimilar to driving yourself, plus time at the deskVariable, plus fuel and parkingTouring beyond Dublin, comfortable driving on the left
Private chauffeur via Enroutz.ca20 to 45 minutesFixed fare via bookerLate arrivals, groups, meetings, children, fixed budget

If you are travelling alone with one cabin bag and your hotel is on a bus route, the bus will be the lowest-cost choice and it is perfectly sensible. If you are arriving at an unsociable hour, are carrying a lot of luggage, are with children, or have a meeting within two hours of landing, a pre-booked car removes variables. The airport's taxi page says taxis are metered and that fares are calculated using the taximeter, with a receipt; a chauffeur booking replaces that uncertainty with a fixed fare quoted before you book. For a broader view of the choice see chauffeur vs rideshare.

Flying to Dublin from Toronto, the USA or the Gulf

The most common brief we hear is some version of: "I am flying from Toronto to Dublin and want a driver at the other end." The Enroutz.ca desk is in Toronto, so the same team that can arrange your Pearson Airport pickup can also arrange the Dublin end of the trip, with one confirmation and one invoice. Departing from Dublin back to North America works the same way in reverse; because of preclearance, the Dublin departure is the point at which you effectively clear US formalities.

Travellers arriving from the Gulf or other long-haul origins land in the same two terminals. The practical differences are paperwork and body clock. For entry requirements, rely on the official Irish Immigration Service rather than a third party, because requirements depend on your nationality.

Vehicles and luggage for Dublin

Vehicle classes are "or similar", with the exact model confirmed at booking.

  • Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac CT6 or Lyriq or similar): up to three passengers, two large and two cabin bags.
  • First Class Sedan (Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar): up to three passengers, two large and two cabin bags.
  • Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon Denali or similar): up to six passengers, five to six large bags.
  • Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter): up to twelve passengers and twelve bags.
  • Mini-coach and coach (20 to 56 seats), Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch limousine and armoured vehicles on request, with availability confirmed at booking.

See the fleet page for more detail. Golf bags need to be declared at booking; they occupy the space of large cases.

Driving on the left: a note for visitors from North America

Ireland drives on the left. Visitors from the USA and Canada are sometimes surprised when the chauffeur opens the passenger door onto the kerb on what feels like the wrong side, or when a hire car has its steering wheel on the right. That is one more reason to let a local driver collect you on the first day. If you plan to hire a car later in your trip, many travellers take the first transfer with a chauffeur, sleep, and collect the hire car the next morning when they are rested.

Business travel, hotels and events around Dublin

Corporate clients can set up a corporate chauffeur account with monthly invoicing, and an assistant can book for a principal while the principal's own contact details stay private. If you are arranging movement for a delegation, read about meetings, incentives and conferences transport and the group transportation options.

For discretion, chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips, and NDAs are signed on request. If you are a public figure or travelling with talent, see the VIP chauffeur service. Enroutz.ca is a chauffeur service and not a security company: we do not provide armed drivers or bodyguards, and we work alongside a client's own security team.

Where Dublin fits into a wider Europe trip

Many itineraries pair Dublin with another European city. The Enroutz.ca desk can book the whole chain with one point of contact: see the Dublin chauffeur service for the city, the Europe hub for other destinations and London Heathrow if your trip routes through London. For the full list of airports we cover worldwide, use the airports hub.

How to book your Dublin transfer

Enter your pickup and drop-off in the booker, choose your vehicle class, add flight details and any extras such as child seats or meet and greet. The booker shows the exact all-in fare for your addresses and vehicle before you pay, and the desk confirms the booking with the partner.

Cancellation is straightforward: more than 72 hours' notice has no charge; 72 hours or less is 10%; 48 hours or less is 50%; 24 hours or less or no-show is 100%, all measured from the scheduled pickup time. Large events may carry a different deadline, stated on your confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Dublin Airport from the city centre?

The airport states that it is about 10 km north of Dublin City, close to Junction 2 of the M1. In practice that is roughly 20 to 45 minutes by car depending on traffic, and longer at weekday peak hours.

Which terminal will my chauffeur meet me in?

Dublin Airport has Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and your airline decides which you use. Give the desk your flight number and the partner will track the flight, the terminal and the actual landing time.

Does the chauffeur wait if my flight is late or immigration is slow?

Yes. Every airport pickup is flight-tracked. On international arrivals we include 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, and 30 minutes on domestic arrivals, so a normal passport control queue is covered.

What if my flight leaves from Dublin for the USA?

Dublin offers US preclearance, based in Terminal 2 according to the airport. Leave plenty of time for check-in, security and preclearance, and make sure your ESTA is approved at least 72 hours beforehand if you travel under the Visa Waiver Programme.

Can I book a driver for the whole day in Ireland?

Yes. As-directed hourly service works well in Dublin and on day trips. The chauffeur waits while you work or sightsee. Tell the desk your expected hours and stops when you book.

How much does a Dublin airport transfer cost?

The booker shows the exact all-in fare for your address and vehicle before you confirm. We do not publish rates on this page because the fare depends on the pickup, the destination and the vehicle class.

Can you meet me inside arrivals with a name board?

Yes, as an add-on. The board can carry an alias name for privacy on request. The chauffeur otherwise meets you at the agreed point, which the desk confirms with your booking.

Do you provide child seats?

Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking. Tell the desk the ages and weights of the children so the right seat is fitted before the car arrives.

Is Enroutz.ca based in Dublin?

No. Enroutz.ca is based in Toronto. The Dublin ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local chauffeur partner and booked, confirmed and invoiced by the Enroutz.ca desk. See how the worldwide network works.
