Milan has two airports and a reputation for fashion weeks, trade fairs and tight schedules. Malpensa (MXP) is the large international gateway, about 50 km north-west of the city; Linate (LIN) is the compact city airport much closer in. If you are flying from Toronto, the USA or the Gulf, you will almost always land at Malpensa. This page gives you the real distances, the train facts, what to do at each terminal, and the places where a pre-booked Malpensa chauffeur is clearly worth it.
Do you need a chauffeur at Milan Malpensa Airport?
Malpensa is about 50 km from central Milan, so a car matters more here than at most European airports. A Milan airport transfer is worth booking for late landings, luggage, groups, Lake Como, or an early meeting. The train is the lowest-cost option for the city. The booker shows a fixed fare before you pay.
Enroutz.ca is a Toronto-based chauffeur service. Our own fleet and chauffeurs run in Toronto, the GTA and Ontario. In Italy the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local chauffeur partner, and the Enroutz.ca desk books, confirms and invoices it. You receive one booking, one confirmation and one invoice, with a 24/7 desk.
Enter Malpensa or Linate and your destination, and the exact all-in fare for the route and vehicle appears before you pay.
Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at Malpensa
Malpensa has two passenger terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The airport's own site states that a free shuttle connects them, though it does not publish the frequency. Which terminal you use depends on the airline, so check your boarding pass or confirmation rather than assuming.

For a chauffeur pickup the terminal matters because the arrivals halls are different. The desk follows your live flight data and confirms the terminal and the meeting arrangement before you land. Add a name-board meet and greet if you want the driver to hold a board inside arrivals; an alias can be used instead of your name.
If your inbound and outbound flights use different terminals, tell the desk when you book so the return pickup is planned correctly. See the airport's train page for the station that serves both terminals.
How far is Malpensa from Milan, and how long does the drive take?
Malpensa is about 50 km from central Milan. By road the drive is typically 50 to 75 minutes, depending on traffic. The airport describes the road approach: from Milan or the east and north, take the A8/A9 motorway to the Busto Arsizio – Milano Malpensa exit and follow the SS336 towards Gallarate and Malpensa; from the west, take the A4 to the Marcallo Mesero exit and the SS336. Real-time traffic can change the best route, and the chauffeur partner chooses it on the day.

Allow a buffer for any meeting. A morning rush on the Milan ring roads can add substantially to a transfer, and some hotels sit inside the central traffic restrictions, which makes the last kilometre slower than the first fifty.
Malpensa Express and other ways into Milan
The Malpensa Express train links both terminals to Milano Centrale. According to the airport, trains run every 30 minutes: from Milano Centrale between 05:25 and 23:25, and from Malpensa (stop "MXP T1-T2") between 05:09 and 22:09, calling at Milano Porta Garibaldi, Milano Bovisa Politecnico and several stations on the way. Tickets can be paid directly by credit or debit card. The journey takes roughly 50 minutes to Milano Centrale; check the timetable on the day.

| Option | Typical time to central Milan | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Malpensa Express to Centrale | About 50 minutes | Fixed ticket price | Solo travellers, hotels near the station |
| Airport coach | Varies with traffic | Low | Budget travellers, Centrale and Linate area |
| Taxi from the rank | About 50 to 75 minutes | Metered | Short notice, no booking |
| Rideshare | Varies | Variable | Small groups, short notice |
| Hotel shuttle | Varies | Included or fixed by the hotel | Airport-area hotels |
| Rental car | About 50 to 75 minutes | Per day plus parking and zone fines risk | Guests driving on to the lakes |
| Private chauffeur | About 50 to 75 minutes | Fixed fare via booker | Late landings, luggage, groups, Lake Como, business |
Note the schedule gaps: the first train from the airport is at 05:09 and the last at 22:09, so late arrivals and some early departures have no train. A chauffeur is the practical answer after a late landing, and it removes the Centrale-to-hotel taxi leg that still follows a train ride.
Our view: if you are alone, travelling light and staying near Centrale, the Malpensa Express is a good choice. For anything else, particularly with a family or after midnight, book the car.
Milan Linate (LIN): the city airport
Linate sits much closer to central Milan than Malpensa, which is why it handles many European and domestic flights. The airport's website points to the metro as one of its main links, and its transport page describes how to reach Linate by underground (see the Linate metro page). For a hotel in the centre, a Linate transfer is typically a short drive, though it depends heavily on traffic. A direct metro line serves the airport, which makes Linate a place where a train-style alternative is genuinely competitive for a solo traveller.

When do you book a car for Linate? When you have luggage, when the destination is outside the metro network, when you are heading from Linate to Malpensa or the lakes, or when you want the same chauffeur to handle a day of meetings. One-way airport-to-airport transfers, for example connecting from a Linate arrival to a Malpensa departure, can be booked directly. The airports are roughly 50 km apart, so allow a generous buffer for a connection. See the city-to-city car service page for how one-way transfers are quoted.
Malpensa to Lake Como and northern Italy
Lake Como is the best-known reason to fly into Malpensa and keep going. The lake is roughly 60 to 90 km from the airport depending on which shore town you are heading for: Como at the southern end is the nearest, and places further up the lake such as Bellagio take longer because the lakeside roads are narrow and winding. The distances and times are approximate; the desk confirms the figure for your hotel when you book.
Practical notes for a lakes transfer:
- Last stretch. Villas and hotels on the water often sit on narrow lanes. Tell the desk the property name so the right size of vehicle is chosen.
- Luggage. A Luxury SUV is more comfortable than a sedan for two couples and their bags.
- Weekends. Lake roads fill up on summer weekends. Early departures help.
- Switzerland. Lugano is across the border; carry your passport on any such trip. See Zurich Airport for the next major Swiss gateway.
Fashion weeks, trade fairs and Milan business travel
Milan's calendar concentrates large crowds into short windows. Fashion weeks are usually held in February and September, and the furniture fair is usually in April. Hotels, restaurants and roads fill up, and airport transfers need to be booked early in those weeks. We do not publish exact event dates here because they change each year; check the organisers' sites for the dates of the edition you plan to attend.
For visitors on a programme of showroom appointments and dinners, an hourly chauffeur keeps one car with you for the day. Read about hourly chauffeur and event transportation. For companies sending several people, corporate accounts with monthly invoicing are available; see corporate accounts and the corporate chauffeur service. City-level bookings are on the Milan chauffeur service page.
Flying from Toronto to Milan: the arrival day
For travellers flying from Toronto to Milan the flight is normally overnight and lands in the morning, six hours ahead of Toronto time for most of the year (five for a short stretch each spring and autumn).
Planning notes for Italy:
- Entry rules. Canadians do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen area, and the passport must be valid for at least three months beyond departure. The Entry/Exit System records a facial image and fingerprints on entry. ETIAS applications were not yet open at the Government of Canada page's last update. Read travel.gc.ca for Italy before you fly.
- Driving. If you rent a car, the Government of Canada notes you can drive in Italy for up to one year with a valid Canadian licence plus an international driving permit or a certified Italian translation, and that entering a limited traffic zone without a permit can lead to fines that arrive months later. A chauffeur avoids that risk.
- Check-in. Rooms are often not ready until the afternoon. Ask about early check-in.
Vehicle classes for Milan transfers
Vehicle names are "or similar" and the exact model is confirmed at booking.
- Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac CT6 or Lyriq or similar): up to 3 passengers, 2 large and 2 cabin bags.
- First Class Sedan (Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar): up to 3 passengers, 2 large and 2 cabin bags.
- Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon Denali or similar): up to 6 passengers, 5 to 6 large bags.
- Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter): up to 12 passengers, 12 bags.
- Mini-coach and coach, 20 to 56 seats, on request.
- Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch limousine and armoured vehicles, on request, with availability confirmed at booking.
Partner vehicles are no more than 4 model years old; Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach up to 7. Wi-Fi, water and phone chargers are in most vehicles, and child, toddler and booster seats are available on request. See the fleet page.
Flight tracking, meet and greet and waiting time
Every airport pickup includes flight tracking. Waiting is free for 60 minutes after landing on international arrivals, 30 minutes on domestic arrivals and 15 minutes on other pickups. Because Malpensa is a long way from the city, a late flight is a real cost for a driver who would otherwise be waiting, and tracking is what keeps the pickup honest.
A name-board meet and greet inside arrivals is available as an add-on. Chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips, and NDAs are signed on request. Read more at meet and greet service and VIP chauffeur.
Departing Malpensa or Linate
For a departure, the chauffeur collects you at your hotel at the agreed time and delivers you to the correct terminal. Because the drive to Malpensa is long, leave a larger margin than you would for Linate, and check your airline's advice on check-in times. If your next stop is Toronto, book the return leg from Pearson at the same time through Pearson airport limo.
For other Italian and European gateways, see Rome Fiumicino, the Europe hub and the airports directory.
