Washington is served by two airports that behave like two different cities. Reagan National (DCA) sits across the Potomac from the Lincoln Memorial and is a short ride from almost everything a government or business visitor needs. Dulles (IAD) is out in Loudoun and Fairfax counties, the gateway for international flights, and a long way from downtown. If you are looking for a Dulles car service, a Reagan National car service or a chauffeur who can meet either, this page covers both: where the driver meets you, how long each trip takes, what the Metro does and does not do for you, and when a pre-booked car is worth it.
Dulles and DCA car service from Enroutz.ca
Enroutz.ca is a Toronto-based chauffeur desk. For Washington, the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local chauffeur partner, authorised to work these airports. The booking, the confirmation and the invoice stay with the Toronto desk: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice and a single point of contact, 24 hours a day. Trips inside the United States use US-licensed partners, because Canadian vehicles cannot do domestic point-to-point work there.
Both airports are run by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, and both enforce the same rule that matters to a passenger: only authorised, pre-arranged services may pick up. The Dulles limousine and sedan page says pickups require a reservation made in advance with a local provider and warns passengers not to accept rides from drivers who approach them without a reservation; Reagan National's equivalent page says the same. That is also a safety point, and a good reason to book before you fly.
What is the best way to get from Dulles or Reagan National to downtown Washington?

From Reagan National, the Metro is quick and low cost, and a chauffeur is a short 15 to 35 minute drive of about 8 km (5 miles). From Dulles, downtown is about 42 km (26 miles); a pre-booked car takes 40 to 90 minutes depending on traffic, while the Silver Line Metro takes about 50 to 55 minutes to Rosslyn plus a transfer.
The choice depends on which airport you land at, what time it is, and where you are going. A hotel in Georgetown or on Capitol Hill is a straightforward car ride from Reagan National. A meeting in Tysons or Reston is much closer to Dulles. Most of the confusion is avoided by telling the booker both your flight and your final address.
Washington Dulles (IAD): terminal, AeroTrain and pickup
Dulles has one Main Terminal, a long curved building with the check-in counters, security and baggage claim. Passengers move to the concourses by the AeroTrain people mover or, for some gates, by mobile lounge. International arrivals clear inspection at Dulles, which is why it is the airport most Europe and Middle East flights use.

The airport's directions page says private vehicle pickup is outside the Main Terminal on the Arrivals Level. The Dulles Access Highway is restricted to airport traffic, and the airport notes that tolls apply on I-66 inside the Beltway at weekday rush hours for single-occupancy vehicles. The airport quotes the drive as roughly 16 miles from the I-66 exit at the Beltway (exit 67). Your driver deals with all of that; the fixed fare is all-in.
For private pickup the driver waits at the arrivals level or, if early, in the cell phone lot, and comes to the kerb when you are ready. The confirmation message names the door. If you want a name-board meet-and-greet inside the arrivals hall, with an alias on the board if you prefer privacy, see meet and greet.
Reagan National (DCA): Terminals 1 and 2
DCA has two terminals. Terminal 1 (formerly Terminal A) has 9 gates and Terminal 2 (formerly Terminal B/C) has 49 gates across its concourses, 58 in all, according to the airport. The Metrorail station connects to Terminal 2 by two enclosed pedestrian bridges on the concourse level and by walkway to Terminal 1.

In Terminal 2, the lower level (baggage claim) is where private vehicles, ride app pickups and taxis are located, while the third floor, ticketing, handles shuttles and tour buses. Pre-arranged chauffeur pickups use the arrivals area, and the driver confirms the exact door by message once you have your bags. Reagan National is a domestic-focused airport, so international passengers usually arrive at Dulles instead.
Distances and drive times
All distances are approximate road distances. Times are typical ranges; traffic around Washington is among the most variable in the country.
| Trip | Distance | Typical drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Dulles (IAD) to downtown Washington, DC | about 42 km (26 miles) | 40–90 minutes |
| Dulles to Tysons | about 25 km (15 miles) | 25–50 minutes |
| Dulles to Reston Town Center | about 10 km (6 miles) | 12–25 minutes |
| Dulles to Reagan National (DCA) | about 45 km (28 miles) | 45–90 minutes |
| Reagan National (DCA) to downtown Washington, DC | about 8 km (5 miles) | 15–35 minutes |
| DCA to Capitol Hill | about 8 km (5 miles) | 15–35 minutes |
| DCA to Georgetown | about 10 km (6 miles) | 20–40 minutes |
| DCA to Old Town Alexandria | about 6 km (4 miles) | 12–25 minutes |
The booker shows the exact fare for your address and vehicle before you confirm. For long runs to Baltimore or beyond, the desk quotes the same way; see the city-to-city car service page.

| Metrorail Silver Line from Dulles | About 50–55 minutes to Rosslyn, then transfer | Fare by distance and time of day | Travellers going to Rosslyn, Arlington or a Metro-adjacent hotel |
| Metrorail Blue/Yellow Line from DCA | 15–25 minutes to central stations | Low | Solo travellers, hotels near stations |
| Taxi | As car | Metered | Travellers who prefer to decide at the stand |
| Rideshare | As car | Surge-priced at peaks | Light bags |
| Rental car | As car | Daily rate plus parking | Trips beyond the city |
The Silver Line is real and useful. The airport's Silver Line FAQs say the station is reached by an indoor pedestrian walkway of about 600 feet, roughly a 5-minute walk, with elevators at the station and the Main Terminal. Trains run Monday to Thursday 5 a.m. to midnight, Friday 5 a.m. to 2 a.m., Saturday 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday 6 a.m. to midnight, and the first and last trains serving Dulles differ from those hours. As of 2026 weekday fares run between $2.25 and $6.75, with $6.75 listed for Metro Center downtown. You cannot check bags at the platform.
That is a fair alternative if you have one bag and a hotel on the Metro. The car is better when you land late, when you have luggage, when you are going to Georgetown, which has no Metro station, or when you want a quiet drive and a phone call.
Why the Dulles drive is not just a number
The 42 km from Dulles to downtown includes a stretch of the Dulles Toll Road and I-66, and I-66 inside the Beltway is tolled at weekday rush hour for single-occupancy vehicles, which the airport's directions page points out. The tolls change by time of day. For you, none of this appears as a line item: the booker shows a single fixed fare for the trip.
Rush hour in northern Virginia is long. The morning inbound peak builds from around 6:30 a.m., and the evening outbound peak runs into the early evening. A 45-minute drive at 10 p.m. can be well over 90 minutes at 5 p.m.
Washington neighbourhoods and what they mean for your route
- Downtown and Penn Quarter: the main hotel and law-firm district, near the Capital One Arena and Metro Center.
- Capitol Hill: congressional offices; security perimeters can change the drop-off point.
- Georgetown: no Metro station; a car is the simple answer.
- Embassy Row and Dupont Circle: diplomatic missions and hotels along Massachusetts Avenue.
- Foggy Bottom and the West End: George Washington University, the State Department and the IMF area.
- Rosslyn, Crystal City and Pentagon City: the Virginia side; close to DCA.
- Tysons and Reston: the corporate corridor west of the city, close to Dulles.
Washington is a city of motorcades, marches and road closures. National events, state visits and the cherry blossom season (usually late March to early April) change traffic, and the desk allows for them when it plans your pickup. For a station transfer, see Washington Union Station.
Vehicles for Dulles and Reagan National pickups
All classes are "or similar", with the exact model confirmed at booking.
- Executive Sedan: Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac CT6 or Lyriq or similar; up to 3 passengers, 2 large bags and 2 cabin bags.
- First Class Sedan: Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar; up to 3 passengers, same bag allowance.
- Luxury SUV: Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon Denali or similar; up to 6 passengers and 5–6 large bags.
- Executive Sprinter: Mercedes-Benz Sprinter; up to 12 passengers and 12 bags.
- On request: mini-coach and coach (20 to 56 seats), Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch limousine and armoured vehicles, with availability confirmed at booking.
See the fleet page. Partner vehicles in the United States are no more than four model years old, and up to seven for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach. Enroutz.ca is a chauffeur service, not a security company: no armed drivers and no bodyguards, and we work alongside a client's own security team. That matters in Washington, where government delegations often travel with their own protection.
Entry rules for international arrivals
Visitors from Visa Waiver Program countries need an approved ESTA before boarding; the CBP ESTA page says you can apply at any time before travel and recommends doing it as soon as you start preparing, and that an e-passport is required. Approval does not guarantee entry, because officers decide admissibility on arrival.
If you are connecting from Toronto, remember that US inspection happens in Toronto under CBP Preclearance. Add up to 60 minutes of free waiting on an international arrival, which covers most Dulles arrival halls.
Government, corporate and group travel
Washington has a strong demand for delegations, association meetings and executive transfers. A single account can cover them all. See the corporate chauffeur service, corporate accounts, meetings, incentives and conferences and group transportation. For a day of meetings across the city, an hourly chauffeur keeps one car and driver with you. City information is on the Washington, DC car service page.
Waiting time and cancellations
Free waiting is 60 minutes after an international landing, 30 minutes after a domestic landing and 15 minutes on other pickups. More than 72 hours' notice means no charge; at 72 hours or less the fee is 10%; at 48 hours or less, 50%; at 24 hours or less or on a no-show, 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup time. Large events can carry a different deadline, stated on the confirmation.
For other airports and cities, see the airports hub, the USA hub, Boston Logan and LaGuardia. Chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips, and NDAs are signed on request.
